The first "coffee shops" under the Procuratie Nuove date back to 1638. Ten years later there were twenty; small living rooms always open, frequented by a colourful crowd of ladies and Knights. History and culture have always given her hand in these famous cafè, Florian (opened in 1720), the Paintings of 1775, Lavena, of more recent times. A stop at one of these cafè, on the soft couches or at outdoor tables, is a must for anyone who wants to be a partaker of the colorful and cosmopolitan world of present-day Venice, which revolves around St. Mark's square, surrounded by its famous monuments.
