Residence of the Doges and the highest authorities of the State of Venice since 1000 ad, the complex, as it appears today, dates back to the 14th century, but landscaping work lasted until the 18th century. The portico and the lodges are in Gothic style; the top has a polychrome lozenges of white marble, grey and pink. The Porta della Carta (1441), which is the main entrance of the building owes its name to the custom of affiggervi documents of public interest. Inside, the beautifully decorated and frescoed halls contain masterpieces of the greatest Venetian artists.
