Since the times of the Serenissima, Rialto was the commercial heart of the city. Still today hosts a popular market, a succession of colourful stalls of greengrocers, butchers, "luganegheri", while, at the fish market every morning is put on sale the fish of the Adriatic. Next to markets are the oldest church in Venice, s. Giacomo di Rialto, known familiarly s. Giacometto, and the Rialto Bridge, stone building in a single arc, by Antonio da Ponte (1592).
