The sidewalk ("fondamenta", as it is called in Venice) delle Zattere along the Giudecca Canal, owes its name to large rafts carrying timber along the River Piave. Starting at the bridge of s. Basilio, meet some notable buildings, including the old school of Salumai (luganegheri).

After the Palazzo Molin, climb the Ponte Lungo: from here you can see the famous squero San Trovaso, one of the construction sites where new gondolas are built. After the Ponte Lungo, Zattere come alive by waterfront cafes frequented by artists and students. Coming up at punta della Dogana, you can enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramas on the St. Mark's basin.
